LUCIENNE FRANCO -LUCIENNE É AMOR 1962

LUCIENNE FRANCO
(Luciene Habib Franco Freitas Câmara)
3/1/1939 Rio de Janeiro, RJ

Única filha do casal Alexandrino Franco e Sarah Habib Franco, Lucienne Franco estudou no Colégio Mello e Souza, no Rio de Janeiro.

MALCOLM MCLAREN - PARIS

Malcolm McLaren first came to prominence as the notorious manager of the Sex Pistols, the premier punk rock band of the late '70s. In the 1980s, McLaren turned performing artist himself, assembling eclectic recordings that were especially popular in Great Britain.

The son of Peter and Emily Isaacs McLaren, McLaren was actually raised by his grandmother, Rose Corre, who gave him home instruction until 1955. Like many who later entered the music business, he was educated in England's art colleges, lots of them. He attended St. Martin's College of Art (1963) and Harrow Art College (1964); was expelled from South East Essex (1965) and Chiswick Polytechnic (1966); and went to Croyden College of Art (1968) and finally Goldsmith's College (1969-1971). Meanwhile, he became especially interested in the obscure French Situationist international movement, which advocated provocative, even absurd actions both as political statement and performance art. The movement was founded in the 1950s and gained its greatest attention during political upheavals in France in 1968 before dissolving. McLaren, who tried unsuccessfully to get to Paris during the May 1968 riots, would apply Situationist ideas to the field of pop promotion. (A good source for information on the Situationists and McLaren's adaptation of their teachings can be found in Greil Marcus' book Lipstick Traces: A Secret History of the Twentieth Century [1989].) While attending Goldsmith's, McLaren began designing clothes, and after leaving college without a degree he opened his first London boutique in 1972. He and partner Vivienne Westwood were also employed designing costumes for such films as Mahler and That'll Be the Day (both 1974). While in New York at a boutique fair, McLaren met the members of the proto-punk group the New York Dolls, and in late 1974, he took over their management, dressing them in red leather and using the Soviet Union's hammer-and-sickle symbol in their stage set and publicity photographs. The concept was not well suited to America, where Communism remained anathema, but it had no great impact on the career of the Dolls, who were on their last legs at that point, anyway. McLaren returned to the London clothing business in May 1975 and used what he'd learned with the Dolls in helping to assemble the Sex Pistols.

The extent to which McLaren instigated the Sex Pistols' brief, flamboyant career has been much debated. From their first record release in November 1976 to their breakup in January 1978, they were regularly found on both the record charts and the front pages of Britain's tabloids, renowned by fans for songs like "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save the Queen" and condemned by detractors as examples of moral turpitude. In 1979, the documentary film The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle suggested that McLaren had planned it all; he made his recording debut on the soundtrack album singing "You Need Hands."

His reputation as a manager established, McLaren began looking for other British talent to handle, briefly settling on the then-unknown Adam Ant before spiriting away Ant's backing band and using it to support a 14-year-old Burmese singer he had discovered, Annabella Lwin, in a band called Bow Wow Wow. McLaren's involvement extended to writing their debut single, "C'30, C'60, C'90, Go," a British Top 40 hit in 1980. "Go Wild in the Country" (lyrics by McLaren) and a remake of the Strangeloves hit "I Want Candy" hit the British Top Ten in 1982, but the band broke up in 1983, though not before McLaren tried adding a second singer, George O'Dowd, dubbed Lieutenant Lush. (O'Dowd, later known as Boy George, went on to form Culture Club.)

In the meantime, McLaren began making his own records, beginning with the single "Buffalo Gals," which combined traditional folk music with hip-hop. Credited to Malcolm McLaren and the World's Famous Supreme Team, it became a Top Ten hit in the U.K., paving the way for the late 1982 album Duck Rock, which reached the Top 20 and produced a Top 40 hit in "Soweto" and a Top Five hit in "Double Dutch." Both "Buffalo Gals" and "Double Dutch" made the U.S. dance charts in 1983, and the remix mini-LP D'Ya Like Scratchin' gave McLaren his first American album chart entry in February 1984. McLaren next turned to opera, recording an adaptation of "Madame Butterfly" that made the British Top 20 in 1984; it introduced his second full-length album, Fans. 1985's Swamp Thing was a contractual obligation collection of outtakes issued while its creator had moved to Hollywood to try to make his mark in the film business. He returned to music in 1989, signing to Epic Records for Waltz Darling, which produced Top 40 U.K. hits in the title track and "Something's Jumpin' in Your Shirt." The album featured guest vocalists as well as star instrumentalists Jeff Beck and Bootsy Collins. Paris, released in Europe in 1994, marked its creator's move to France. In October 1998, a rerecording of "Buffalo Gals," "Buffalo Gals Stampede," credited to Malcolm McLaren and the World Famous Supreme Team Versus Rakim and Roger Sanchez, reached the British charts.

KINGDOM COME

The stars for this review belong to the band Kingdom Come for a beautifully created ass kickin' album. This is as close to Zeppelin as you'll get. Lenny Wolf definately shows his creativity through the hard beat of 17 to the soulful lovin' you. And don't ever forget the rocker, get in on. Which Wolf gives a brief reflection on his latest album effort, independent.
Anyway, you cannot go wrong with any Kingdom Come album. However, I have waited for this album to be remastered for over a decade. NOTE-this album is not remastered. Don't be fooled by the advertisement on the front of the disc. The only remastered song is the extra cut of get it on, which only has one more drum line in the beginning. The wording is very tricky and I can't believe they have the nerve to pull this. I spent all this dough for nothing. The original cd from the eighties sounds much better. Just to think this is 2004 and they are creating cd's that sound worse than the original.
Lenny Wolf (vocals), Danny Stag (guitar), Rick Steier (guitar), Johnny B. Frank (bass), James Kottak (drums & percussion).

THE STAINED GLASS-Crazy Horse Roads-1969

Stained Glass 66-69, one of the better bay area bands. 2 LP's never took off, likely due to the huge number of other bands being showcased in the bay area. Saw them many times in my youth. The Whatz it club, Contentental Ballroom, Very tight band, formally known as the Trolls. Jim Mcpherson the bass player went on to play with Cooperhead after Stained Glass broke up. They sounded like a mix of Beatles-Springfield-Cream. Lot of earlier 45 stuff also on this CD. I give it high marks.

DRAGONFLY

Dragonfly was actually a band called The Legend who's debut album (on which they weren't allowed to play or contribute songs) was somewhat butchered by their record company. So they decided to pursue other interests. Under a different name (association with that Legend album wasn't gonna happen), they recorded this. They didn't have the best sound quality (crackles and pops still cover the sound on CD), but they had enough technology to mess around. Throughout this album, the track suddenly jumps into backward recording, slows down suddenly, or dissipates altogether. The boys explode into ridiculous giggles, get wasted by a moaning trombone, and turn into a giant rolling ball of mung at the end before returning to form. Along the way, we have some good songs. "Blue Monday" opens the album with a moan of "Oooh my God.." then harsh chords, before rhythm guitarist Gene cracks his throat in anger. "Enjoy Yourself" is bouncy, thoughtful psychedelia, "Crazy Woman" sounds very 60s and somewhat Moby Grape. "To Be Free" is a good bit of yearning and hope: the classic 60s message. There's just all kinds of good stuff here. The drums are fierce and the fuzz-toned lead guitar is excellent. There's some heavy solos on this album. Great performing. Gene's vocals sometimes sound like Keith Relf of the Yardbirds and sometimes like Jack Bruce of Cream. It's forgotten, and that's a pity. Take an acid trip ito the good ol' days of heavy psychedelic hard rock. It'll blow you away

SID BARRETT 1990

A founding member of Pink Floyd who suffered a mental breakdown in the late '60s, Syd Barrett is revered in some circles for his singular vision. While outtake recordings that have surfaced have sadly shown much of his psychic dislocation, his two solo albums he released have much idiosyncratic beauty to offer. Barrett is the second solo album, joining The Madcap Laughs as a solid representation of Barrett's innate tunefulness and bizarre, surrealist imagery. Produced by the Floyd's David Gilmour and Rick Wright and featuring Humble Pie's Jerry Shirley on drums, the album veers from lighthearted shuffling jug band tunes to the grand and majestic "Baby Lemonade," possibly Barrett's finest song. Several other Barrett staples such as "Dominoes," "Rats," "Gigolo Aunt," and "Effervescing Elephant" showcase Barrett's knack for unexpected chord changes and inventive rhythmic breaks. Ironically, Barrett's music is not some heavy "acid rock" trip but a free-spirited, openly optimistic, and folkie journey through one man's unusual mind.

BONGO BAND 1973/1974

The Incredible Bongo Band is probably not a band most people have heard of, but one of their songs, "Apache" is one of the most sampled songs in hip-hop especially by old school acts of the 80's. Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Nas, The Geto Boys, The Ultramagnetic MC's, Grandmaster Flash, KRS-One, Kool Moe Dee and countless others have used the drum break from the song (The Sugarhill Gang had a minor hit with "Apache Rap"). The group wasn't really a group at all, but a studio concoction of session players who were quickly assembled in 1972 to round out a soundtrack album (the less than memorable The Thing With Two Heads) with two tracks. Those two tracks, "Bongo Rock" & "Bongolia", led to the full-length album Bongo Rock and the follow-up Return Of The Incredible Bongo Band. If you are a fan of 70's style funk music, then this is an album for you, but mostly it is only notable for the breaks some of the songs provided.

MAMA'S PRIDE 1975

Mama's Pride's self-titled debut is a great example of Southern-style rock from the mid-Central states (St. Louis, MO, to be exact). The band could clearly jam as well as the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, and the Outlaws, so why their albums remained in the vaults so long is one of the great mysteries of rock & roll. However, it's great to have their first two albums, including this one, back in print, as they are must-owns for any true rock fan.

PATTI SMITH - HORSES 1975

On her 1975 debut, Smith was full of piss and vinegar, seriously interested in bringing together high art and low three-chord rock & roll. As a result, her free-form poetry meshes with covers of "Gloria" and "Land of a Thousand Dances," and the album centers on two long, highfalutin' pieces, including the three-part suite (warning! warning! art!) "Land." (The CD version appends a messy live take on The Who's "My Generation.") Led by Richard Sohl's piano, the arrangements don't exactly rock, and some of Smith's songwriting gets buried in its stylistic affectations (there's a great song under "Redondo Beach"'s fake reggae). But the point of Horses was Smith's persona of volume, cunning and exile, and it comes through distinctly. --Douglas Wolk .
